Basics

Yume Shousetsu (Dream Novel)

(yume shousetsu)

Fan fiction where the reader becomes the protagonist, experiencing romance or friendship with anime/manga characters. Features name conversion.

Yume Nushi (Dream Protagonist)

(yume nushi)

The protagonist in a dream novel. Appears as the reader's self-insert. Also called 'yume onna'.

Yumejo (Dream Girl)

(yume joshi)

A woman who enjoys reading or writing dream novels. A fan who enjoys imagining romance with fictional characters.

Features

Name Conversion

(namae henkan)

A feature that automatically replaces the protagonist's name with the reader's chosen name. Key for immersion.

Community

Yume Community

(yume kaiwai)

The overall dream novel and yumejo community. Commonly used on social media.

Styles

Character-Specific

(aite kotei)

A style where you only romance one specific character. Similar to 'single-stan'.

Tropes

Reverse Harem

(gyaku harem)

A situation where multiple male characters love the protagonist. Otome game-style stories.

Doting Love

(dekiai)

A trope where the character deeply loves and cherishes the protagonist. Sweet, fluffy content.

Yandere

(yandere)

A character whose love has become obsessive or unhealthy. The possessive type.

Settings

Isekai Dream

(trip yume)

Dream novels where the protagonist transfers from our world into the fictional world. Similar to isekai.

Original Protagonist

(ori nushi)

Short for 'original protagonist'. A protagonist with their own distinct backstory, separate from the reader self-insert.

Canon-Compliant

(gensaku zoi)

Dream novels that follow the original story. The protagonist gets involved in canon events.

AU (Alternate Universe)

(parallel)

Dream novels set in different settings from the original (modern day, school setting, etc.).

Formats

One-Shot

(tanpen)

A short, standalone dream novel. Quick to read.

Long-Form Series

(chouhen)

A multi-chapter dream novel. Features deeper story development.
