(ゆめぬし)

The protagonist of a dream novel — the types and how they're crafted

What is a Yume Nushi?
In one sentence

Yume nushi (夢主, 'dream protagonist') is the main character of a yume shousetsu. Typically a reader self-insert — name-conversion features replace their name with the reader's own. Variants exist, like 'ori-nushi' (original protagonist) where the author sets a distinct identity.

  • The protagonist of a dream novel
  • Usually a reader self-insert — you project yourself into the story
  • Name conversion swaps their name with yours
  • Variants: 'ori-nushi' (original protagonist), unnamed, canon-character nushi
  • Sometimes affectionately called 'yume-nushi-chan'

Types of Yume Nushi

Dream novels use a few different patterns for the protagonist. Knowing the style makes finding stories you'll love much easier.

Reader Self-Insert (Standard)

The nushi as a vessel for the reader. Physical description is abstract, personality is sketched loosely, and name conversion slots the reader's name in. The most common style.

Ori-nushi (Original Protagonist)

A nushi the author has given their own personality, backstory, and appearance. Reads more like a traditional character novel than a self-insert fic.

Unnamed / Anonymous Nushi

No fixed name — referred to as 'I' or 'she/they' only. Maximum imaginative space for the reader.

Canon Minor Character

The nushi is actually a background character from the source material. Strong continuity with canon — feels woven into the original story.

Yume Nushi vs Yume Joshi

The two terms sound close but refer to totally different things.

Yume Nushi (fictional protagonist)

  • Character inside the dream novel
  • Usually crafted as a reader self-insert
  • Their name gets replaced with the reader's via name conversion
  • The author writes their personality and arc

Yumejoshi (real reader / writer)

  • A real person who reads or writes dream novels
  • Has their own 'oshi' (favorite character)
  • Projects themselves into the nushi to enjoy the story
  • Engages with other fans on social media

Tips for Writing a Compelling Yume Nushi (for authors)

A nushi that readers can slip into effortlessly multiplies the story's immersive pull. Keep these in mind when writing:

  • Keep physical description minimal. Over-specifying hair color, eye color, or body type blocks reader projection.
  • Show personality through reactions, not monologue. Dialogue and action reveal more than inner exposition.
  • Limit backstory to what the plot needs. Deep character dossiers often alienate readers who want to insert themselves.
  • Use name-conversion tags carefully. Supporting nicknames and address variants makes the read feel seamless.
  • Center the nushi's relationship with the oshi. Not just the nushi alone — the nushi AS they exist alongside the character.

FAQ: Yume Nushi

What's the difference between yume nushi and yumejoshi?

Yume nushi is the fictional protagonist inside the dream novel. Yumejoshi is the real person who reads and writes dream novels. One is in the story; the other enjoys the story.

What is an 'ori-nushi'?

Short for 'original protagonist'. An ori-nushi is a yume nushi the author has given a distinct identity — name, appearance, personality, backstory. Reads closer to a character novel than a pure self-insert fic.

Should a yume nushi have detailed backstory?

Depends on the style. For reader-insert, less is more. For ori-nushi, give them depth. The rule: match backstory density to the story's concept.

Can the reader choose the nushi's name?

In most dream novels, yes. Name conversion replaces the placeholder with whatever the reader enters. Supported on Uranai Tsukuru, Pri Shousetsu, Hameln, and more.

What does 'yume-nushi-chan' mean?

It's an affectionate term community members use when talking about the protagonist. Within a story, the name gets replaced; in community discussion, 'yume-nushi-chan' is a collective term.

Do yume nushi have to be women?

No. Historically they've skewed toward women-reader audiences, but male and nonbinary nushi are increasingly common. Authors usually flag the nushi's attributes at the start of a work.
